Important requirements on the GS1 128 Barcode (or UCCEAN Barcode)

The following section describes certain specific requirements on the GS1 barcode. These requirements are important because GS1 barcodes usually accompany items that are shipped to different warehouses running a variety of management systems. These management systems may implement the GS1 specifications in different ways. Some follow the GS1 specifications in a very strict manner, while others use a more general format of the GS1 barcode.

TechnoRiverStudio allows you to control the different aspects of the barcode and lets you to meet the requirements of all these systems.

The following diagram illustrates the general structure of a GS1 128 barcode according to the GS1 specifications.

This is also the general structure of the barcode that will be generated by TechnoRiverStudio. Most warehouse management system will accept this general format.

Strict GS1 128

The following requirements are also mentioned in the GS1 specifications and some warehouse management systems implement them very strictly.

1. A Start C character is preferred when the GS1 128 barcode consists only of numbers.

2. Concatenated Element Strings constructed from Application Identifiers with a PRE-DEFINED length do not require a FNC1 separator character.

This results in a GS1 128 barcode of the following structure.
